PRO: Pornography

I support pornography. I don't view it. I don't like it. But I support the freedom of choice and along with that comes pornography. In fact, I will (attempt) to argue that pornography is a powerful tool for women. Someone in class said that it is the only industry where women are paid more than men. Women are idolized, wanted, and seen as valuable. This is a rare occurrence in history.

The freedom of choice is one of the principles that our country was founded on. I believe that a woman should have the right to do whatever she wants with her body. By telling woman that they couldn't participate in pornography we are limiting what they can do with their own body. By stating that women are being objectified would do more harm than good. Women go into this industry voluntarily. They can leave voluntarily. Why is this a bad industry then?

A legal porn industry is safer than an illegal one. If pornography was made illegal, women wouldn't have to be paid, they would be more frequently forced into the industry, and there wouldn't be any standards and procedures to the practice. The porn industry will always be needed as long as men have penises. Why not keep it legal so we can try to keep it as safe as possible?

The pornography industry empowers woman. It gives them hierarchy over their male counterparts. The evidence of them being paid more is an example to how valuable they are. Feminists should be in favor of this since it's the only industry where gender inequality is in favor of women.

What the difference between an actor and an actress having a sex scene in a romantic comedy and two porn stars debuting in a film? There really is none. Limiting pornography would limit freedom of choice, expression, and would do more harm than good.

  1. I don't fully understand why women are paid more then men in the porn industry because there is every possible variation of porn because everyone has something different that turns them on. There's porn with people of different races, sexes, and weights in order to fill every niche of people's fantasies. I don't think the porn industry objectifies women but I don't think it glorifies them either. It is an industry where every sex, gender, etc can participate. I personally have never seen a porn video so I can't speak from experience whether it objectifies women or not in the actual videos, but how I view it now from the outside it is a legal profession that has many different people involved in it, including both sexes. If the porn is about heterosexual sex, then it definitely involves a man and a woman and who's to say that the man isnt the one being objectified in that particular film? just something to think about...

    1. I think my main objection to porn (and my opinions of porn being degrading to women) comes from the opinions that carry over from someone viewing porn to fulfill a fantasy into the real world. I highly doubt that someone, man or woman, who watched porn that was degrading to women can separate the feelings he/she experiences in that moment from the work place or a similar situation.
