Immortal God of Crete?

In chapter 5 andrea talks of being in crete and not knowing the
language. She feels free of judgment because of the difference in
language and not having her family around to judge her, yet the people
of Crete are well aware of her actions. Andrea hates the Amerikans that
call the dark Greeks niggers and cunts. She is ashamed for them. She
goes wherever she wants at night but the Amerikan women stay on the base
and do not get a taste for anything Crete has to offer because they are
too infatuated with their own American ways. Andrea seems to look down
upon this. Crete is the land of Zeus, the land touched by gods and all
the Amerikans can think of is their American frozen dinners and calling
the locals various obscenities.

Andrea gets into trouble with men of authority in this chapter.
Questioning their judgment and begging them to let her live her life as
she desires. Andrea doesn't want to go back to Amerika or associate
with the Amerika that is new and bloody and concrete and surrounded by
death. She escaped that Amerika to come to Crete where everything is old
and living and green. I think Andrea relates to Crete because she is
some kind of immortal God in this novel, eternally living through many
hardships and rapes but still finding the light. She is having sex with
a man and refers to herself as the sun that torches him. He is aware of
what everyone says about Andrea, that she is a whore, but she doesn't
care. He asks about children and she explains that she is on birth
control. When M doesn't come around for a while she is no longer
human. Andrea yearns to see him at any cost so she can be human again.
The sex they had was more than her usual rape encounters and when he
takes her to dinner and then "fucks her like any other whore" she is
crushed for he has turned out to be just like every other man in her
life and this was one time where she actually yearned for something more
from a man. The society had gotten to him, he now believed that she was
a whore as the society had continuously told him. She is no longer an
immortal because when he rapes her she has essentially died, she has
become human again after M rapes her. M tells the gunrunner he can have
Andrea and she is enraged that she is considered someone's property,
some leftover piece of meat for the animals to scavenge at. In this
sequence of events Andrea goes from the Amerikan woman, who is the sun
and immortal and free on the island of Crete to the dead piece of
property who is a dead piece of meat. She was the blazing sun with a
fire inside of her and after M rapes her she has fallen further than
before. She is now a dead carcass.
