I happened upon this picture while perusing (read: procrastinating on) Facebook. I thought it was very relevant, given our conversation in class last week about how rape is one of the least-prosecuted crimes in the U.S. It touches on several of the points we discussed as reasons for this abysmally low prosecution rate- including a woman's "promiscuity" as a justification for rape. Thoughts?

I just read a perfect example of this in action: a judge in Luton, David Farrell, sentenced two men to forty months for raping an 11-year-old girl and filming it so they could circulate it on the internet. The usual penalty for child rape is 8-13 years, but they got off with such a light sentencing because it was decided the girl "looked older" than her age. Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteThat's terrible. Just be cause she looked older doesn't mean she is! I can't see any circumstance in which an 11 year old looks REMOTELY close to 18. That's sickening.
